About Us

The seed for Sandwell wines was started when a winemaker met a grape growers’ daughter in 2002.  Peter then a cellar hand in the Barossa Valley and Kim a former grape growers’ daughter from Loxton.  It took a few years and several wines but – the inevitable happened and Sandwell Wines was created.

Testing the waters (or is that wine) saw our first vintage in 2008 when we called on family and friends to help hand pick just over a tonne of McLaren Vale Shiraz to create our first 100 or so dozen.

Why the name Sandwell?  It’s in the family history, Sandwell comes from Pete’s great grandmother, Florence Sandwell Cheyne (1897-1998) whose grandfather, Thomas Sandwell was a water carter on the Lefevre Peninsula region of Adelaide in the late 1800’s, after arriving from Scotland aboard the Isabella Watson in 1877.  The site Sandwell is now encompassed by the suburbs of Peterhead and Birkenhead on the Lefevre Peninsula.
