2014 Sandwell Shiraz
Grape Variety: Shiraz 100%
Region: McLaren Vale 100% grown on Foggo Road
Special Notes: Vines planted in 1915 and are dry grown, handpicked; hand plunged in open fermenters and basket pressed. Aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak barriques.
Only 147 cases made
Colour: Deep rich hues
Bouquet: Fragrant powerful aromatics showing savoury meats, musk spice and complexing cedar nuances. Together with bright dark plum and dark chocolates notes, this Shiraz continues to evolve in the glass
Palate: Dense sweet dark fruit with even poise through the palate showing wonderful balance and length of flavour. Full bodied but never over the top the palate is filled with dark red fruits, balanced spice, cedar notes from the French oak & fine savoury tannins that extend the palate. A combination of powerful richly flavoured with soft supple tannin finish
Vintage conditions: The growing season for the 2014 season was not without its challenges, but on the whole it seemed that for every punch Mother Nature threw at us there was a counter punch. Spring saw extremely dry and windy conditions but they were softened by the heavy winter rainfalls we had experienced leading up to that period. Similarly the heatwave experienced in January was immediately followed by a rejuvenating rain in early February. Both of these events in isolation would normally have had a major detrimental effect, but as they happened consecutively the rain proved a relief to the suffering old vines. The cool weather that followed the rains resulted in a slow even ripening process. The vines gently ticked away at their job, with ideal flavour development.
